Manga have announced the UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Ghost in the Shell 2.0 on 26th October 2009. In 1995, the animated cyberpunk action-thriller Ghost in the Shell stunned moviegoers and anime fans alike by seamlessly merging traditional animation with the latest CG imagery to create an intelligent and artistic sci-fi spectacle unlike anything seen before. The film enjoyed both critical and popular acclaim at the international box office before going on to reach even greater success on DVD.

Now, director Mamoru Oshii (The Sky Crawlers; Avalon) has revisited his classic masterpiece to create a newly enhanced "director's cut" for cinemas in the form of Ghost in the Shell 2.0. Containing over 90 altered and enhanced scenes and an all-new soundtrack that includes dialogue re-recorded by the original actors (with the exception of one new voice cast member who adds a unique spin to the plot), this new release will open in selected UK cinemas on 2nd October before arriving on DVD and Blu-ray at the end of the month.

"Only a hundred thousand people saw [Ghost In The Shell] in cinemas back in 1995," remembers Oshii. "To this day, most people have only seen it on video. That's why I really wanted people to have a chance to see it on the big screen, and I really hope they do. In terms of CGI, there are over 90 cuts that have been altered and enhanced. And with extensive use of filter effects and colour correction techniques throughout the rest of the film, it's fair to say that pretty much the entire movie has been enhanced in some way."

Priced at £19.99 RRP on DVD and £24.99 RRP on Blu-ray Disc, features are outlined below...

DVD - A 2-disc set, the first disc features the new Ghost in the Shell 2.0 presented in anamorphic widescreen with Japanese and English DD2.0 and DD5.1 Surround audio and optional English subtitles. The second disc is the original Ghost in the Shell movie/DVD release from Manga which includes the same extras listed on the Blu-ray version below.

Blu-ray Disc - Includes both Ghost in the Shell 2.0 and the original version of the film on 1-disc. Features include:
  • Ghost in the Shell 2.0
    • 1080P 1.85:1 Widescreen

    • Japanese and English 2.0 LPCM

I've got the Japanese version of it and must say, it looks a lot different. The colour "correction" they have done matches it to the Innoocence scheme pretty well.

They have also done a lot of out of focus stuff as well.

I'm 50:50 on all that. At least the original still exists.

One thing I can't understand is why they cropped the image on the 2.0 (eg, they have zoomed slightly into the picture).

Note that the extras aren't on the DVD check disc, I'm assuming they are Blu-ray exclusive. You can still find them on the original 1.0 (is that what we're calling it now?) DVD release if you need them. Obviously, the original GITS isn't on the DVD either, and there's no mention of it being a 2-disc release.

EDIT: It does say 2-disc at Play! Oops. Sounds like they just stuck in the original disc as well. My goof, I only got the 2.0 check disc.

Yup, was just going to say, before posting this yesterday I double-checked and both the DVD and Blu-ray will be packaged with the original Ghost in the Shell film's DVD release.

So the original will only be on there in SD in the form of a regular DVD thrown in? They can forget it then, I'm not buying it until I see the original version on Blu-ray.

OK, took a look at the Blu-ray today and you'll find updated specs in the main news piece.

The good/bad news is:

The original movie is on the Blu-ray and is in HD, but it's 1080i and has to be the worst transfer I've ever seen on Blu-ray. The source looks like a VHS tape.

GITS2.0 looks pretty darn impressive though from what little I watched and is full 1080P with DTS-HD Master Audio.

Could you please put up some caps of the 1.0 BD? Some caps that mirror those on asianblurayguide would be great.

No BD-ROM drive here so can't help you.

VHS is probably a little harsh - the transfer on the original movie is very sloppy though. It's got very noticeable cross couloration, detail seems to fade in and out, the image just isn't very stable. Matt Shingleton will be reviewing this for us and he's always very thorough so expect a full writeup.
