Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Blu-ray Disc release of several titles under the banner of The Studio Canal Collection. Arriving on 28th September 2009 are: Le Mepris, Belle De Jour, The Elephant Man, Last Year in Marienbad, The Deer Hunter, Ran and The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum.
All come in special packaging with booklets.

Extras listed with (NEW) next to them indicates the content is new to the UK but not necessarily new worldwide.
With the exception of Le Mepris, The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum and Ran (which we have discs for and have already confirmed) the other titles may have additional audio options not listed above. Ran and Le Mepris for example are only listed as having Japanese and French audio respectively on the press information, but the discs have several other audio options.
All 3 discs we tested (Le Mepris, The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum and Ran) played on Region A and B machines.
All come in special packaging with booklets.

OMG! These look amazing. I'm so pleased I never got around to getting The Elephant Man HD-DVD.

For Merpis, Marienbad and Ran - pick up Criterions - no way they could be improved.
Elephant is a difficult choice, but if one can afford - the Lynch box includes an extra disk of documentary and that's the way to go.
I would like to see improvemt in AE edition of Belle, but I suspect this will be exactly the same disk with diffrent design (and maybe some more pages in booklet).
Bottom line - the only disk to watch will be Belle...

It seems to be common for 2 disk DVDs sets to be replaced by one BD and keep all the extras, so not surprising that Deer Hunter is one disk. That's assuming they include the extras of course!

The French Studio Canal HD-DVD release of The Elephant Man has sourced for a PAL master complete with the audio speed up. I wonder if this will use the same master.

I'd bet money on it - they wouldn't exactly have raked in a fortune on the HD-DVD, so I doubt they'd be inclined to make a brand new HD master.

This is my mistake - so used to associate BDs with the blue banners at the top and bottom of cover art that I took this disks for SD DVDs...
So, if Deer Hunter carries on all the extras from DVD and transfer is decent, this will be a definitive BD - what sort of extras Universal could put in their edition of BD (when and if they issue it) one could judge by their Legacy series DVD.
For Marienbad Criterion is the first choice.
As far as I know Criterion has no plans of issuing Mepris on BD...

Exactly. From an extras point of view this is likely to beat the USA Universal BD. That has only a few extras, whereas the UK R2 SE got loads.
Ran and Elephant Man for me, although I am happy with my Ran Criterion. It's not one I'd rush to upgrade.

The 3 discs we've got all open with a list of countries to choose from which determines what studio logos are played, what piracy warnings you see and of course the language the menu is displayed in. I mention this because it's worth noting that Ran and Le Mepris both have a 'USA' option which leads to the Lionsgate logo suggesting you'll see some of these released in North America through them at some point.

FANTASTIC! I was seriously considering buying a Region B machine to play Le Mepris, but now I can stick to my region A player!! Le Mepris is one of my favourite films of all time, and the thought of seeing it in HD (as well as finally seeing Il était une fois... Le mépris), is very exciting indeed.
