Boldly going where no Blu-ray has gone before, it has been officially confirmed that Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise are being beamed onto the HD format to tie in with the release of the new film. Indeed, it's going to be a bumper year for Trekkies, with both The Original Series and The Original Series Movies coming to the format. Details of the former release are here.

Paramount Home Entertainment will release Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection on US Blu-ray Disc on 12th May 2009. The six films have been digitally remastered in high definition with new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio and will be presented in their original theatrical versions only, with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan having been particularly scrubbed up for its HD debut in a manner, according to TrekMovie, similar to that of Paramount's recent The Godfather release. The vast majority of extras from the SD two-disc releases of the films will be present, with the exception of the commentary and three featurettes from the Director's Cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the original text commentaries for all six films, although the latter seem to have been replaced with the "Library Computer" option, which will present you with trivia at any point in the film you wish.

In addition to the films, there's a seventh disc included called The Captain's Table. This will be a 70 minute round-table chat presented by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes will talk "candidly" about their time on Star Trek. Quite what the latter two are doing on a set devoted to The Original Series is open to debate, but there you go.

The Digital Bits has also heard report that a set featuring the four Next Generation movies is also in the works for later in the year. Region Coding for both TOS movie sets is unconfirmed at the moment, but this is Paramount, so the likelihood of them being all regions is very high.

I will get the 6 film box set. I will keep hold of my DVDs as well however.

On a side note I did not know Ricardo Montalban had died. It sadden me to read that as he always came across as such a nice bloke. Khan is not only my fave trek film but my second all time fave film behind Blade Runner.

How come Star Trek 2 is getting extra special treatment? What a silly excuse for a trilogy box set.

It's the 6 film box set for me too.

Re Wrath of Khan, Nick Meyer said that the original negative was in such bad shape they had to do significant restoration on it for this release,

Sounds very plausible that Khan's negative needed work. On the Director's Edition DVD, there was a noticeable jump in clarity during the edited-in extended scenes compared to the rest of the movie.

Yup. Was just noting that the degraded negative for the theatrical version was likely used to create the DE, with deleted scenes edited in from other, better sources.

Grr, why go to all that effort and then release the original cuts. The pacing of the motion picture in particular was terrible.

So they can release the extended cut versions later. Paramount know that Trek is their biggest cash cow and that fans will buy both versions. Guaranteed extra cash.

I imagine the commentary track with Shatner and Nimoy could be amusing.

The extended footage for some/all of the extended cuts was mastered in SD.

The special effects for the Director's Cut of ST:TMP were only rendered to SD resolution for the DVD release and would need redoing for HD. I think they wanted this out quick (in time for the new movie) and cheap.

So I'll be waiting for the extended cut of TMP in HD then, if it ever arrives (given Wise was involved in the process and essentially "directed" the special edition, and he's dead now). The special edition changes make a huge difference to the film and actually work (unlike Lucas's crap efforts in Star Wars). Wrath of Khan extended too but mainly just because that's the one I've been used to for years and the missing scenes would be jarring.

As for doing a special job on Wrath of Khan, as well as the the print quality issues, there's the fact it's the best film of the entire series ;)

Price is surprisingly not too outrageous for Blu-Ray at aprox £12 a film (at current exchange rate)
