Boldly going where no Blu-ray has gone before, it has been officially confirmed that Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise are being beamed onto the HD format to tie in with the release of the new film. Indeed, it's going to be a bumper year for Trekkies, with both The Original Series and The Original Series Movies coming to the format. Details of the former release are here.

Paramount Home Entertainment will release Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection on US Blu-ray Disc on 12th May 2009. The six films have been digitally remastered in high definition with new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio and will be presented in their original theatrical versions only, with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan having been particularly scrubbed up for its HD debut in a manner, according to TrekMovie, similar to that of Paramount's recent The Godfather release. The vast majority of extras from the SD two-disc releases of the films will be present, with the exception of the commentary and three featurettes from the Director's Cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the original text commentaries for all six films, although the latter seem to have been replaced with the "Library Computer" option, which will present you with trivia at any point in the film you wish.

In addition to the films, there's a seventh disc included called The Captain's Table. This will be a 70 minute round-table chat presented by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes will talk "candidly" about their time on Star Trek. Quite what the latter two are doing on a set devoted to The Original Series is open to debate, but there you go.

Bonus Disc: Star Trek: The Captains’ Summit (New - HD)

The films will be presented 1080p high definition with English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, French and Spanish audio and English, English SDH, French, Spanish & Portuguese subtitles, and will retail at $104.99. They will be packaged in amaray thin packs with a slipcase.

In addition, on the same day Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy will also be released on both DVD ($28.99 SRP) and Blu-ray Disc ($48.99 SRP). This will contain the second, third and fourth films only, with Blu-ray Disc content the same as above (these 3 films in particular feature French DD2.0 Surround and Spanish Mono audio). The DVD edition will only feature the 'new' extras and includes the remastered films presented in anamorphic widescreen with English DD5.1 EX Surround, French DD2.0 Surround, Portuguese and Spanish Mono, and English, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. The Digital Bits has also heard report that a set featuring the four Next Generation movies is also in the works for later in the year. Region Coding for both TOS movie sets is unconfirmed at the moment, but this is Paramount, so the likelihood of them being all regions is very high.
