Vertigo Films and Contender Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Faintheart on 2nd February 2009. Faintheart is the result of MyMovieMashUp, the initiative by MySpace, Vertigo Films and Film4 that sought to harness the collective creativity of the world’s largest online community.

Set in the world of battle re-enactments, Faintheart is a comedy that charts the epic quest of Viking Warrior Readmund the Just, aka Richard the sales assistant (Eddie Marsan), as he attempts to win back the love of his long suffering wife Cath (Jessica Hynes). Tired of Richard’s all-consuming obsession with his Iron-age alter ego, Cath kicks him out of their home and into the real world. His honour is put in further peril when Cath begins seeing Martin’s PE teacher Gary (Paul Nicholls). Realising he must finally face up to the challenges of the present day and fatherly responsibility, Richard enlists the help of best friend and ‘Trekkie,’ Julian (Ewen Bremner). Together with Julian and a merry band of assorted geeks known as the ‘Bloody Broadswords.’ Richard must summon all of his Norse courage to discover the real warrior within and prepare for his greatest ever battle.

Features include:
  • Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English DD2.0 Stereo and DD5.1 Surround
  • English subtitles
  • On-set Diaries
  • Katie Melua Records “Toy Collection” for the Film
  • Casting Videos

How odd - a dvd release so quickly after its debut in cinemas is very puzzling. I saw this film at the Cambridge Film Festival in September last year and it's actually quite good, certainly deserving of more confidence that this release strategy would suggest. It's nothing very original, but it's good fun - Eddie Marsan is fine in the lead role and certainly should have got top billing above Ewen Bremner, who is very much a supporting character (though just as good). And Jessica Hynes is excellent as always.

The cinema release is more or less to gain awareness for the DVD release I think. It's just a short run (might even just be the 1 day) of apparently free screenings in selected cinemas (the free part might require some form of Myspace membership as you can vote for cinemas they're going to show it in on the myspace page for the film).

More on the free screenings:

The film will be screened free of charge in 150 cinemas on 27th January 2009. On the same day the film will also be streamed free of charge on its Myspace profile page.

Using the 'Heart Map' application on the Myspace profile page (www.myspace.com/faintheartthemovie) you can discover the nearest town that can potentially screen the film and cast your vote for that location. The 150 most popular locations will be selected for the free screening.
