As many have predicted, recently announced Paramount USA HD DVD releases including Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood and The Kite Runner are now effectively cancelled. Paramount have removed all listings for these future releases and after contacting their press reps for comment, we were told that with the exception of Into the Wild and Things We Lost In The Fire, all HD DVDs have been cancelled.

The only other future release title from Paramount effected is The Jack Ryan Collection which will no longer makes its planned 25th March debut. Dreamworks’ Bee Movie has also suffered the same fate, and will not longer make its 11th March release date.

No surprises, really, I suppose. Paramount did exactly the same thing with their Blu-ray announcements when they went HD DVD exclusive.

I read that Bee Movie is cancelled too.

But why haven't they announced BDs? It's strange Paramount haven't announced any.

I must say this does make Paramount look so incompetent. They switch to HD-DVD and then only a few months switch back, never mind out all those HD-DVD supporters who supported your product. I am pleased they've switched but it doesn't exactly make Paramount look professional.

What's even stranger is that they announced Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood AFTER Toshiba announced that it was dropping HD DVD.

What ever happened to Star Trek TOS HD-DVD then?

I have a few friends who I am certain will be quite upset about this...

Glad I waited... :)

Season 1 was released here in the UK and in North America. I do not have it but I am told its quite good. Season 2 was meant to come out in May but now of course will not. I hope Bee Movie is released as I can not be bothered waiting for the Blu-ray to turn up.

Yeah it's definite. Bee Movie is also definitely not coming out anymore.

All the studios switched one way or another due to a shed load of money chucked at them. It's never about professionalism, just money, and this war was always really fought in the board rooms rather than through real customer choice. The "choice" the customer ultimately made was the one the execs ensured was most available.

As for Star Trek TOS, I hope on Blu-Ray they ditch the DVD combo support and drop the price massively. Even at half the price it's still massively over priced. Though I would like them to offer a branched version of the episodes without the CGI effects. Anyway, Paramount likely has a lot of work to do to produce BDJ versions. Don't expect to see it on Blu until 2009 at least.
