wow, i thought that BlackBook would only make it to "worst of" lists, well it seems the dvd production is top notch.
apart from that, nice lists.

hmmmm...

Looks like Mike Sutton, Michael M (no surprise there! ;) ), Kevin Gilver and Dave F, have more or less the same tastes as me.

I must note that I find it incredibly strange that there isn't a single disc here by Artificial Eye. I do believe that you are being rather disrespectful to your home distrib as they were very consistent with their output during 2007.

Regardless, Happy New Year to the Times Review Team from Chicago!

Not at all Svet.  The quality of Artificial Eye's DVDs were as high as usual, but I don't think the titles they released this year were as strong as those named above.

I did however select two of their titles in my own five personal favourite (as opposed to best) DVDs of the year:  Noel's Top 5 DVDs of 2007

Happy New Year to yourself!

I would have thought one of Artificial Eye's Kaurismäki boxes - or the project as a whole - would have deserved a nod from someone.

Still, Kaurismäki himself would have despised such an accolade, so it's probably for the best.

There are many other DVDs that deserve a nod this year, and certainly many before Kaurismaki I would think, but unfortunately we can't cover everything in such a limited feature.  Again though, the Kaurismaki sets were actually given a nod in my more comprehensive review of the year.

Clydefro, Noel, and John... You are welcome to watch movies with me anytime. Dave F and Kevin, on the other hand, will be upstairs in the guest room forced to watch their DVDs on the tiny TV in the room that is always too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

My own choice for DVD of the Year was the Ford at Fox boxed set, which I don't see mentioned by anybody. It was another good year for Criterion, though, and as for Region 2 releases, that W.C. Fields boxed set (10 discs, 17 films) is hard to top. Right at year's end sans fanfare we got a Harry Langdon Collection from Facets that shows the world why a few brave souls have been championing Langdon for years as an unsung genius of silent comedy. Warners' The Jazz Singer and Noir Vol. 4 are essential titles, too. A very good year indeed.

Oh, I dunno... ;)

But the reason for it not being mentioned here is, I suspect, Fox not handing out any review discs to DVD Times reviewers and the cost of getting it across The Pond is roughly the equivalent to the GDP of a small South American dictatorship, no mean consideration (and I got lucky), otherwise I'm certain it would have made at least one list.
