Buena Vista Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of King Arthur for 29th November 2004. Antoine Fuqua's sword-clashing epic starring British favourites Clive Owen and Kiera Knightley is out to own on two separate extras filled DVDs. The theatrical version is being released alongside a previously unseen Director's Cut of the film with a 15 certificate. This version features an all action look at the bloody savagery of the ancient battlefield - with the full gritty glory of extended battle scenes included within the additional 17 minute run time. DTS sound is exclusively included on the Director's Cut DVD.

Bonus features on both editions are rather limited with only the following available:
  • Alternate Ending (4:08)
  • Blood on the Land: Forging King Arthur - Making of featurette (17:09)
  • Producer's Photo Gallery

Below we have a look at the artwork for both editions followed by menu screens from the Director's Cut...

Me thinks the theatrical cut is meant specifically for for Joe Public.

Is the DC coming on R1? And hopefully with DTS?

That's quite a jump 12A to 18, it will probably change the tone of the film too.

The R2 announcement seems to suggest DTS is an R2 exclusive. Check out the related content box for a link to the R1 details.

Don't take Buena Vista's word yet that King Arthur's DC will be an 18 cert - the BBFC haven't even classified it.

That certainly is a drop in extras! Maybe the deleted scenes are just included in the DC, but the loss of the commentary tracks is annoying to say the least.

Rik Booth: I agree, Gladiator is a 15 and was made as an R-rated film, so I doubt King Arthur will be an 18 since it was made for the PG-13 rating.

All true Valmont except the PG-13 cut was a 12A here this is talking about a different cut which maybe 18.

I can live without DTS if the R1 2 disc release will also have the DC?

I thought it was fairly clear but obviously not. The R1 will also be available in separate Theatrical and Director's cut versions.

Wow, that "from the producer of Pearl Harbor" blurb will ensure this sells by the bucketload.

I know the cover needs to be different on the second cut but the DC has awful cover art.

I can see most stores only selling the TC and therefore most people won't even know the DC exists. I hope the DC at least gets all the extras if not it's the R1 for me, which will mean I have to lose out on DTS

Considering this has been changed so much from the actual events to call it A: True and B: a story is surely a blatant lie?

I much prefer the DC Artwork to the Theatrical Version Artwork.

Apart from that stupid blurb about Jerry Bruckheimer..... its very simple but effective...

It aims towards the story by showing a shield rather than splashing out on "look whos in this film!!"

With DTS. This is a definite purchase....

Both covers look pretty good... until that silly "From the producer of Pearl Harbor" tag... which, let's be honest, is going to sell the film to no one. Why doesn't it say "From the producer of Pirates of the Caribbean"?! That might trigger an increase in sales!

The director's cut artwork has a rather naff just-out-of-photoshop feel. What happened to the rather swanky sword-in-a-scarf logo? Ah well.

Still sceptical as to how this could have bounced from one level to the next, but then I suppose Saturday Night Fever had a PG and a 18 version, so perhaps this version will include a disco dance-off or something.

The American director's cut is a R rated version so the uk version will either be a 15 or 18.
If the theatrical cut is indeed in pan and scan why does the cover art have the widescreen logo on the spine?
R1 at present has no DTS! but loads of extras, not sure yet which to go for, both have rubbish cover art.

Why do they advertise the producers anyhow. All they do is raise funding for the film, so it doesn't really matter what previous films they have done.

They could have said, from the Director of 'Training Day'

Does the Region 3 have the same extras as the Region 2 or Region 1?

The trouble with R3 releases is no one will know with any certainty until it's out to buy and someone reports back.

They are usually much cheaper though DaveF and as the AV now a days is generally very good I get the R3 is available/as good as the R1/R2.

I suspect it will be similar at least.

Any news on why we lose so much of the extras? I'll probably get the R1 DC. I love DTS but the extras are so much more extensive.

"from the producer of pearl harbor" surely they don't want to put people off from buying it!
