Originally announced for 7th September 2004 MGM Home Entertainment have now removed the Region 1 DVD release of The David Lean DVD Collection from their schedules indefinitely.

The set was planned to feature eight films from the Oscar winning director, available to buy individually ($14.95 each) or as part of an 8-DVD gift set ($99.96) in which you would have found: Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, In Which We Serve, Madeleine, Oliver Twist, The Passionate Friends, and This Happy Breed.

Each film was to be presented in Full Screen with English Mono audio and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. The only bonus features were to be the original theatrical trailers (with the exception of Great Expectations, Madeleine, The Passionate Friends and This Happy Breed which have none).

I don't like the look of the covers, I don't like the fact that the only bonus are the trailers, I don't like the fact that Great Expectations doesn't have any bonus and I'm definitely NOT parting with my Criterion Brief Encounter!

MGM, why?

I'm a big Lean fan and I had great expectations about these releases.

Sadly, MGM has dropped the ball on this Boxset that come the end of the year could have been one of the best of 2004.

Considering how big MGM are they're one of the most lazy studios out there. I own very few of their DVDs partly because they never seem to take any care with them.

Although personally I love the cover art.

Only ever watched Great Expectations and even that wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be.

I hope the delay was made in order for some bonus to be included. Either that or they had some trouble with the transfers.

Oh, well...I hope this turns out good, though!

MGM has the biggest movie library in the world and they cant even release decent DVDs of such wonderful films (brief encounter, great expectations)

If I had the money, I'd buy the criterion collection

I hope they redesign those covers while we're waiting. The pictures are lovely, but those oversized MGM logos and blocky grey letters on grim black backgrounds make the films look like Cold War thrillers.

When these finally do appear, I wouldn't be too surprised if the transfers prove to be Carltons, licensed out to MGM. MGM did, after all, use Carlton's transfer for The Ghoul.

The pictures on the covers aren't lovely! They're colourized montages mostly! - terrible. Have they not seen what Warners are doing with original poster art?

Hey, I like colourised montages! Just so long as the films themselves aren't colourised (horrible thought).

Does anyone know the reason the box was cancled? Will it 'ever' be released?
